Edgar Road
Edgar Road is a residential street of about 1,850 feet in South Billerica, between Concord Road and the Concord River, running northeast from Ranlett Lane to Kirk Road; Hilary Road branches from it north to Pinetree Road. It was laid out on a "Subdivision Plan of Land in Billerica" drawn by George H. Poor, surveyor, in November 1967, which re-divided earlier lots of the Ranlett land, registered in the Land Court as case 2792, into lots 326 to 405 on Edgar, Solar, Mirror, Kirk, Hilary and Pine Tree Roads. The town's records call it "Ranlett Grove, a definitive sub-division plan of land in Billerica," after the old riverside colony of Ranlett Grove to the west. The Planning Board approved it in January 1968, a copy was filed in the Land Registration Office on May 5, 1969, and it was registered on June 5, 1970 as Land Court Plan 2792-T (Registration Book 89, Page 29). The plan does not explain the name, and its origin has not been found. The houses on Edgar Road were built in 1970 to 1972 according to the assessors.
The Planning Board submitted Edgar Road for acceptance in 1973, describing it as running "From Ranlett Lane to Kirk Road, a distance of approximately 1854 feet," but the annual town meeting voted it down. In 1974 the town meeting referred it, with all the other streets proposed that year, to a new Permanent Street Acceptance Committee. At the seventh session of the annual town meeting, on April 24, 1975, the town accepted the laying out of Edgar Road, "a way 50 feet wide and 1854 feet more or less long." The committee had found it "a completed subdivision street," but noted that "there is a bird bath in the street near Lupine Lane, the street sign is down at Hillary Road and the top row of blocks on one catch basin should be reconstructed," and the meeting raised $275 for the repairs. The town overlaid the street in 1997 under its pavement management program.
